There is an important update for teachers and students in tertiary institutions across Ghana.
In a strongly-worded press release dated 9th June 2025, the unions expressed deep disappointment over the government’s failure to release the necessary exchange rate for processing the BRA allowance. According to the unions, this delay has become unfair and damaging, especially to lecturers who rely on the allowance to support their research and academic work.
The National Presidents of CETAG (Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana), UTAG (University Teachers Association of Ghana), and TUTAG (Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana) are meeting with the government today, Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The three teacher unions—UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG—have already issued a joint strike notice due to the government’s delay in paying the Book and Research (BRA) Allowance.

The National President of UTAG, Prof. Mamudu Akurugu, along with other union leaders, is expected to be part of this crucial meeting with finance minister today. There have been threats of a full-blown strike across all campuses if the situation is not resolved.
However, there is still hope. If both the unions and the government reach an agreement today, the planned strike could be called off—and academic activities may proceed as scheduled.
Speaking in an interview with Peace FM, Prof. Akurugu said, “The assurance we’re getting, we believe that we will not get to a place where we have to declare the strike.”
