GES Warns Schools Against Taking Money from BECE Candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Central Region has sent a strong warning to all heads of basic schools.

Some schools have been collecting money from students who are preparing to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), claiming the money is for supervisors and invigilators. But GES says this is not allowed.

In a letter dated 5th June 2025, the GES stated:

“This practice is unacceptable, constitutes a criminal offence, and is in direct violation of the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) regarding the conduct of the BECE.”

The GES is asking all school heads who have taken money for this purpose to stop immediately. If any money has already been collected, it must be returned to the students by Monday, June 9, 2025.They added:

“Heads of Basic Schools who are collecting or have directed any teacher in their school to collect any unauthorised money from BECE candidates are hereby directed to cease this practice immediately.”

The GES also reminded schools that only officially assigned supervisors and invigilators can be at the exam centres. Any teacher who is not officially assigned should not be loitering around the centres.

“No teacher who is not officially assigned as an invigilator or supervisor should be seen loitering in or around any examination centre.”

The GES has asked Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to make sure all schools follow these rules and keep a close eye on exam centres.
