Nurses’ Leaders apologizes to Health Minister after Ridge Hospital incident
On September 3, 2025, a great moment happened in Ghana’s health sector. The leaders of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) visited the Minister of Health, Honorable Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to say sorry for recent comments made in the media that hurt his feelings.
The Minister accepted their apology warmly. He encouraged the nurses to talk openly and work closely with the government to make healthcare better for everyone.
During the meeting, the Minister shared some good news:
-
13,500 new nurses have been added to the government payroll.
-
The Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF) has been set up to support nursing training.
-
Several health facilities across the country are being improved.
He also mentioned that the government is paying backdated allowances for nursing training, clearing National Health Insurance (NHIS) claims, and helping nursing schools by covering half of their admission fees.
Mr. Akandoh promised to make sure the collective bargaining agreement is put into action. This agreement aims to improve nurses’ working conditions and help Ghana achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
He asked everyone—nurses, healthcare professionals, and the public—to stay calm and trust that the government is committed to solving problems in the health sector.
At the same meeting, the GRNMA leaders shared concerns about challenges in healthcare and called for urgent fixes to help nurses work better and serve patients well.
The nursing leaders who met the Minister were:
-
Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, Immediate Past President
-
Dr. Krobea Asante, Current President
-
Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, General Secretary
-
Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, GRNMA spokesperson
