Government to reverse names of Public Universities changed under Akufo-Addo

The government, led by former President John Mahama, is getting ready to bring a new bill to Parliament. This bill will suggest changing the name of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) located at Navrongo and other public universities in Ghana.
The Minister for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, shared this news during a ceremony in Accra where they swore in the new Governing Council of CKT-UTAS.
CKT-UTAS was started in 2021 to help students learn hands-on and technical skills for jobs around the world. However, the school has faced many problems, especially with buildings and facilities. Some people have also not been happy with the university’s name since it was first introduced.

Mr. Haruna said that this is part of a bigger plan to look at the names of public universities that were either created or renamed when President Nana Akufo-Addo was in office.
“We have had extensive consultations with the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society. As a result, the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences is likely to change-possibly reverting to the original vision,” Haruna explained.
He said that the government will bring a general bill to Parliament to talk about changing the names of some universities that were renamed or started during President Akufo-Addo’s time.
“There will be a general bill to consider the renaming of several public universities that were renamed or established during former President Akufo-Addo’s administration,” he added.
The Minister also made it clear that the government does not want to disrespect or forget the people these universities were named after.
“This is not to say those individuals do not deserve recognition, but the renaming will aim to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions,” he said.
Some of the schools that might be affected by this name change include the University of Mines and Technology and the Abdulai Salifu University.
