“A police officer with just SHS education is threatening a university graduate?” – Frustrated teacher fumes [watch Video]

A newly trained teacher from Ghana has spoken out strongly against a police officer who allegedly threatened teachers during a peaceful protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025.

These teachers, who completed their training in 2022, were demonstrating because they have not been paid for several months. Many of them have not even received their staff ID numbers, which are needed to process their salaries.

One of the affected teachers, who comes from the Northern Region, shared his frustration in a viral video. He said he has been teaching for the GES for the past ten months but has not received a single salary. He explained how this situation has made life very hard for him.

I owe a lot of people, and I still need to pay rent and feed myself. Life is not easy,” he said.

During the protest, the teacher said a police officer came and warned them not to cross a “red line” or they would be beaten. The teacher felt disrespected by the officer’s behavior and was very angry. He pointed out that the officer only had a Senior High School (SHS) education and should not speak to university graduates like that.

“Ten months without pay, and you think you can tell me how to talk?” he asked in the video. “I came from the Northern Region to Accra not to make noise, but to ask for what is due me. Then a police officer tells us he’ll beat us if we cross a line? That’s not right.”

The teacher added, “I went to university, and I have worked for ten months without pay. I am here to speak my mind, and you are threatening me? If you think you’re strong, take off your uniform and let’s see. It’s only the uniform I respect.”

He also shared that many of his fellow teachers are going through the same struggles. “We pay rent, we eat, we owe, and people we owe keep calling us. Instead of helping us, you bring in police to scare us.”

He ended by saying, “You, an SHS-level officer, are threatening a graduate who hasn’t been paid for ten months. If you went even two months without pay, you would gather your people and march here too.”

The teachers said they had written a formal letter to the GES to share their concerns. They waited for more than two hours at the GES office during the protest, but no one came to talk to them.
