Ghana Education Service Releases 2025/2026 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for the 2025/2026 school year for all basic schools across the country. This includes Kindergarten (KG), Primary, and Junior High Schools (JHS).

New Mid-Term Breaks Introduced

One of the important updates in the new academic calendar is the introduction of mid-term breaks in all three terms. This means that students will have a short break in the middle of each term to rest and refresh before continuing their studies.

The first mid-term break will take place from 31st October to 3rd November 2025. GES has stated that each mid-term break will last for two days.

Academic Calendar Highlights

Here are the key dates for the 2025/2026 school year:

First Term (15 weeks)

  • Starts: 2nd September 2025
  • Ends: 18th December 2025
  • Vacation: 19th December 2025 – 6th January 2026

Second Term (12 weeks)

  • Starts: 7th January 2026
  • Ends: 20th March 2026
  • Vacation: 21st March – 1st April 2026

Third Term (13 weeks)

  • Ends: 23rd July 2026

For JHS 3 students, the school year ends on 11th May 2026, after writing their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

GES Advice to Heads and Stakeholders

The GES has asked all heads of basic schools and regional directors to follow the calendar strictly. This will help ensure that the school year runs smoothly and that teaching and learning are not interrupted.

Parents, teachers, and students should take note of these important dates and plan ahead. The addition of mid-term breaks is a good step to support the health and well-being of students and teachers alike.

Let’s all get ready for a productive and successful 2025/2026 academic year!
