PRINCOF Reduces Teacher Trainees Feeding Thrice To Once Daily

PRINCOF Makes Changes to Feeding System in Colleges of Education

The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has announced new changes to how teacher trainees in public colleges will be fed. This new arrangement will start from Monday, 16th June 2025.

In a letter to the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), PRINCOF explained that they can no longer continue to provide three meals a day with the current amount of GHS 8.00 per trainee per day.

“It is impossible to continue feeding your members on the current GHS 8.00 per trainee per day,” the letter stated.

According to PRINCOF, the government gives each student GHS 400 every month as part of their feeding grant. Out of this, GHS 196 is set aside to cover food. This amount breaks down to about GHS 8.00 per day. PRINCOF said they have tried many times to convince TTAG to allow an increase, but those talks have not worked.

Because of this, they said:

“Due to the difficulty in sustaining the provision of three meals per day within the current allocation of GHS 8.00 per trainee… all teacher trainees residing on campus will be provided with one hot meal daily.”

This means that starting June 16, 2025, trainees living on campus will only receive one cooked meal per day.

PRINCOF explained that the cost of food, transport, and other logistics has gone up, making it hard for colleges to keep feeding students three times a day.

Even though good nutrition is important for trainees’ health and learning, PRINCOF said they must also think about what colleges can afford.

“The present strain on college budgets is significant, and this measure is aimed at safeguarding essential services while ensuring that at least one nutritious meal is provided daily.”

This new change affects all 47 public Colleges of Education across the country.
