CETAG Gives Fresh Update on Ongoing Strike Ahead of Colleges of Education Resumption Date

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced that its strike is still going on. This was stated in a memo released on 12th January, 2026 by the National Executive Officers of CETAG.

According to the memo, the strike started on 24th November, 2025, and it has not been called off. CETAG said the government has not solved their problems, so there is no reason for teachers to go back to work.

Why CETAG Is Still on Strike

CETAG says many important payments owed to teacher educators have not been paid. These unpaid issues are making life difficult for lecturers across the Colleges of Education.

Here are the main problems:

1. AYRWC Payments

Twelve (12) Colleges of Education have still not received their AYRWC payments. Four (4) colleges have received only part of their money. This means many lecturers are working without being paid what they are supposed to receive.

2. 2023/2024 BRA Arrears

No College of Education has received money for the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance (BRA). This allowance is important because lecturers use it to buy books and do research to teach students better.

3. 2022/2023 BRA Arrears

Even the 2022/2023 BRA has still not been paid properly. CETAG says no college has received the money on a pro-rata basis, which means everyone is still owed.

4. Akrokerri College Research Allowance

The research allowance top-up for Akrokerri College of Education has also not been paid. This has made work harder for lecturers there.

Strike Will Continue

CETAG has made it very clear that the strike will continue until further notice. No member should return to teaching or office work unless the National Secretariat gives official instruction.

They also warned that all zonal and local leaders must make sure members follow the strike rules. Any teacher who breaks the strike will be reported.

Unity Is Important

CETAG called on all teachers in the all  Colleges of Education to stay united and strong. The leaders said that their strength is in their togetherness. If some people go back to work, it will weaken the struggle.

They thanked all members for their patience and sacrifice and said their efforts will bring the right results.

What This Means for Students

Because the strike is still on, academic work in many Colleges of Education remains stopped. This affects lectures, exams, and other school activities. Students will have to wait until CETAG and the government reach an agreement.

Conclusion

The CETAG strike is not over. Teachers are still waiting for their unpaid salaries and allowances. Until these problems are solved, they have promised not to return to work.

The hope of both teachers and students now depends on the meeting at the National Labour Commission (NLC) on 21st January, 2026, where a final decision is expected.

Until then, the strike continues.
