Nigeria Ranks Ahead of Ghana in 2025 EF English Proficiency Index

Nigeria has ranked higher than Ghana in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), a global report that measures how well adults use the English language. The ranking shows how countries perform in English skills for education, work, and international communication.
According to the 2025 EF EPI, Nigeria placed 5th in Africa and 29th in the world. Ghana followed closely, ranking 6th in Africa and 36th globally. This means that both countries performed well compared to many others around the world, especially in Africa.
The EF English Proficiency Index is released every year and is based on test results from millions of people who take EF’s English tests online. The report helps governments, schools, and employers understand how strong English skills are in different countries.
Nigeria’s higher ranking suggests that many Nigerians are using English confidently in daily life, education, and business. English is widely spoken in Nigeria and is used as the main language for official work, teaching, and communication across the country.
Ghana’s performance is also impressive. Being ranked 6th in Africa shows that Ghana remains one of the top English-speaking countries on the continent. English is the official language in Ghana and plays a key role in schools, governance, and the media.
Even though Nigeria ranked slightly higher, the difference between the two countries is not very wide. Both Ghana and Nigeria continue to show strong English language skills, which is important for global opportunities, education, and international trade.
In conclusion, the 2025 EF EPI highlights the strong position of both Nigeria and Ghana in English proficiency in Africa. While Nigeria ranked ahead of Ghana this year, Ghana still remains among the leading English-speaking nations on the continent.
