Public Utility workers Of TUC – Ghana Declares Nationwide Strike Against Illegal Small-Scale Mining – Gh Edu Pro
On October 10, 2024, members of the Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana will join a nationwide strike.

This decision comes after a meeting held on October 1, where leaders discussed issues related to illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “Galamsey.”
The strike was prompted by ongoing concerns about the negative impacts of illegal mining on the environment and the livelihoods of people in affected communities.
The union is calling for action from the government and relevant authorities to address these issues effectively.

In a letter sent to the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Ltd, the PUWU emphasized that all members, except those in the Production and Maintenance Units, are expected to participate in this strike.
The decision was further reinforced during a follow-up meeting on October 7.
The union hopes that this strike will bring attention to the pressing issues surrounding illegal mining and encourage the government to take meaningful steps to resolve them.
The leadership of PUWU urges all members to support this cause and join the strike on October 10, 2024. Their cooperation is essential in making a strong statement against the dangers of illegal small-scale mining.
