The President of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), has praised the government for taking steps to review the teacher licensure exams.
Mr. Razak was speaking during TTAG’s 29th Annual Delegates Congress held at Hohoe on Friday, May 17, 2025. He said there are problems between the B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) programme and how the licensure exams are currently being set.
“There is a disconnect between the B.Ed. curriculum and the examination structure, coupled with the lack of adequate preparation time and resources,” he said.
He appreciated the fact that important bodies like the National Teaching Council (NTC) and the Ministry of Education are talking to TTAG to help fix the exam system.
“We commend the National Teaching Council, and by extension the Ministry and the Committee, for engaging the Teacher Training Association of Ghana in a meaningful dialogue to reform the exam in a way that maintains quality without being punitive,” he added.
The teacher licensure exams started in September 2018 under the Akufo-Addo administration. During the last elections, the NDC (National Democratic Congress) promised to cancel the exam.
Mr. Razak also asked the government to allow TTAG to join important discussions about education policies.
“In the interest of national development… we demand that TTAG should not only be invited to share their position on policies, but be an active member in the process that is being present in committees being formed,” he stated.
Also at the event, Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, spoke on behalf of former President John Mahama. He said the government is planning to work more with development partners to improve education.
“No transformation is sustainable without partnership… We are therefore going to intensify and deepen our collaboration with development partners such as UNAIDS, UNICEF, T-TEL, UNESCO, the World Bank, and others,” Dr. Apaak said.
He also said the government wants to add leadership training for principals and digital literacy for college tutors.
