UTAG Declares Indefinite Strike to Protect Forests, Farms, and Water Bodies – Gh Edu Pro

On October 9th, 2024, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) concluded a nationwide referendum among its members.

The referendum sought approval for industrial action in response to mining activities in sensitive areas such as forests, farms, and water bodies.

This decision comes from UTAG’s desire to protect the environment and livelihoods from harmful mining practices.

Out of 2,762 members who voted across all 15 branches of UTAG, an overwhelming 77.95% (2,153 members) voted “Yes” in favor of taking industrial action. Only 21.98% (607 members) voted “No,” while a small number, 2 members, abstained from voting.

Following this strong support, UTAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) held an emergency meeting to discuss the next steps. Citing UTAG’s Constitution, NEC unanimously declared an  indefinite strike starting on October 10th, 2024. All UTAG branches are expected to participate in the strike until the government imposes a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting in protected areas, including forests, farms, and water bodies.

This action reflects UTAG’s commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations and ensuring that mining activities do not continue to harm ecologically sensitive areas.

Prof Mamudu A. Akudugu, UTAG’s National President, and Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, the National Secretary, signed the official statement, urging members to support this critical national cause. UTAG is determined to push for lasting solutions to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

The message from UTAG is clear: preserving the environment must take priority over mining, especially in areas that are vital for the country’s ecosystem and the well-being of its people.
