National Service Personnel across Ghana could soon receive a higher monthly allowance if the National Service Authority (NSA) succeeds in its proposal to the government.
The NSA has announced that it is working to increase the monthly allowance for National Service Personnel from the current GH¢715 to at least GH¢1,200.
Deputy Director-General of the National Service Authority, Fuseini Donkor, disclosed that the Authority has already presented its proposal to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. According to him, the leadership of the NSA remains hopeful that the proposed increase will be included in the 2026 national budget.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Mr. Donkor said the Authority is making every effort to ensure that service personnel receive better financial support.
“They take GH¢715 per month, so we are hoping to increase it to at least GH¢1,200,” he said.
Mr. Donkor explained that the proposal was previously submitted to the relevant authorities but was not approved for inclusion in the 2025 budget. However, he emphasized that the Director-General and the Board Chairman have continued to engage key stakeholders to push for the increase.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t captured in the 2025 budget. I know my DG and the Board Chairman are still pushing. We are hoping that in the 2026 budget, there could be a favour and grace on us,” he added.
If approved, the proposed increase will provide significant relief to thousands of National Service Personnel who are serving in schools, hospitals, government institutions, and private organizations across the country.
The current allowance of GH¢715 has been widely criticized by many service personnel, who say it is no longer enough to cover transportation, accommodation, food, and other living expenses due to the rising cost of living.
The proposed increase to GH¢1,200 would help improve the welfare of graduates undertaking their mandatory one-year national service and enable them to carry out their duties with less financial pressure.
Although the proposal has not yet received final approval, the latest update from the National Service Authority gives hope that service personnel may enjoy a better allowance once the 2026 national budget is presented and approved.
For now, National Service Personnel are encouraged to stay patient as discussions continue between the NSA, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the government.
