“The Previously Approved Fees by Parliament Still Hold Until Further Notice” – GTEC Clears the Air on College of Education Fees

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has finally spoken about the recent concerns surrounding the increase in fees at the country’s public Colleges of Education.

In a press statement released and signed by Prof. Augustine Ocloo, the Deputy Director-General of GTEC, the Commission addressed the public’s concerns and provided clear updates about the issue.

According to the statement, GTEC met with executives of the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) on Monday, 27th October 2025, to discuss the proposed fee increments.

The meeting made several key observations:

  1. “A new fee structure had been proposed by PRINCOF which was about 10% increase from last year’s fees.”
  2. “New components had been introduced into the fee structure (digital resources fees).”
  3. “Accommodation had gone up by 100%.”
  4. “Examination fees had increased slightly.”

GTEC also noted that PRINCOF is expected to meet the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education on Tuesday, 28th October 2025, to further discuss and deliberate on the matter.

Following these developments, GTEC has directed PRINCOF to suspend any action on the proposed fee increases until a final decision is made. The Commission made it clear that “the previously approved fees by Parliament still hold until further notice.”

This means that no College of Education should implement any new fees or increments until Parliament and GTEC give official approval.

In addition, GTEC gave further instructions regarding college-specific fees that have been agreed upon with Student Representative Councils (SRCs). The statement explained: “For college-specific fees that have been agreed with the Student Representative Councils, each College is required to submit a signed resolution by at least two-thirds of the student body for consideration by the Commission.”

This move is to ensure transparency and fairness in how fees are decided across all public Colleges of Education in Ghana.

Prof. Ocloo ended the release by assuring the public that the Commission’s aim is to promote accountability and protect students from unexpected financial burdens. He added, “This release seeks to clear the air on the fees proposed by public Colleges of Education.”

The latest update from GTEC brings relief to many students and parents who were worried about the sudden increase in fees. It also shows that the Commission is taking steps to ensure that all financial decisions concerning Colleges of Education are properly reviewed and approved before implementation.

In summary, students are advised to continue paying the old fees approved by Parliament until further notice, while awaiting the outcome of the upcoming discussions between PRINCOF, Parliament, and GTEC.

This action by GTEC is a sign of its commitment to maintaining fairness and promoting a transparent educational system for all.
