GPRTU Reduces Transport Fares by 15% Starting May 25

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that transport fares across the country will go down by 15% starting Saturday, May 25, 2025.

This good news was shared after a meeting between the national leaders of GPRTU and the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Speaking to 3news, the Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the decision and said, “We just had a meeting with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that, effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%.”

He explained that this reduction is because fuel prices have dropped by 18%. “We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend,” Mr. Moro added.

He also urged other sectors, especially the spare parts industry, to also reduce their prices. “We expect our counterparts in the spare parts industry to follow suit and reduce their prices,” he said.

Mr. Moro made it clear that the union didn’t wait for other factors like spare parts or maintenance costs to drop before announcing this new fare. “We want to place on record that we did not wait for the other components of our cost build-up to reduce before implementing the 15% reduction,” he stressed.

He also sent a strong warning to transport operators who may try to ignore the new directive. “If your union has decided, you have no option but to comply,” he warned.

This move is expected to bring some relief to passengers across Ghana, especially those who rely on public transport daily.
