According to the 2025 Budget, the government has allocated GH₵203 million for teacher trainee allowances. This funding is expected to benefit 68,792 trainees across all 46 Colleges of Education in Ghana.

However, there is still a challenge with unpaid arrears from previous academic years. Reports indicate that GH₵159.97 million in arrears from the 2023/2024 academic year remains unpaid. This means that before new payments begin, the government may need to clear outstanding allowances.

A few weeks ago, Colleges of Education started collecting trainee data to process the allowance payments. This is a necessary step before the funds can be released. If you have not yet submitted your details, make sure you do so as soon as possible to avoid any delays when the payment is made.

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that both nursing and teacher trainee allowances will now be paid through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD). This means that, once the system is set up, allowances will be paid monthly, just like the salaries of government workers.

This new payment system could bring some benefits, including:

  • Timely payments: Since salaries are paid monthly through CAGD, allowances may also follow a fixed schedule.
  • More transparency: Trainees may be able to track their allowance payments more easily.
  • Fewer delays: If the system works smoothly, it could reduce the long waiting times for allowance

For now, the teacher trainee allowance has no set payment date, but preparations are ongoing. The government has allocated GH₵203 million for the allowance, with 68,792 trainees set to benefit. However, there are still GH₵159.97 million in unpaid arrears from the 2023/2024 academic year.
