The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the 2026/2027 academic calendar for basic schools across the country.
The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) and gives important dates for reopening, closing, vacations and mid-term breaks.
First Term
The first term will last for 15 weeks.
- Reopening: Tuesday, 8th September 2026
- Closing: Thursday, 17th December 2026
- Christmas Vacation: 18th December 2026 to 4th January 2027
- Mid-term Break: 5th and 6th November 2026
Second Term
The second term will last for 12 weeks.
- Reopening: Tuesday, 5th January 2027
- Closing: Thursday, 25th March 2027
- Vacation: 26th March to 19th April 2027
Third Term
The third term will last for 14 weeks.
- Reopening: Tuesday, 20th April 2027
- Closing: Thursday, 22nd July 2027
- End-of-year Vacation: From 23rd July 2027
BECE 2027 Date
The Ghana Education Service also announced that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 5th May to Wednesday, 12th May 2027.
This means JHS students, parents and teachers will need to prepare well ahead of the examination period.
Two-Day Mid-Term Breaks
GES reminded schools and stakeholders that a two-day mid-term break will be observed in each term.
Schools are also expected to observe all public holidays that fall within the academic year.

GES has encouraged school heads, teachers, parents, guardians and learners to take note of the dates and make the necessary preparations for the new academic year.
