Bongo Ideas Urges Government to Cancel Teacher and Nursing Trainee Allowances

Bongo Ideas Criticizes Government’s Focus on “Alawa” System

Popular social media critic, Bongo Ideas, has strongly criticized the Ghanaian government over its spending priorities, especially the payment of student allowances known as Alawa.

According to him, Ghana is focusing on the wrong things. He argued that the money used for allowances could instead be used to expand the health system, pay teachers, and support nurses.

Bongo Ideas questioned the logic behind the policy, asking:
“What is Alawa going to solve? That money can be used to fix serious problems. Ghana has not been able to solve its challenges, but we are paying people for just going to school. Every serious government must cancel the Alawa system.”

He also added that if Ghana’s systems were functioning properly, young people—especially teachers and nurses—would not have to hit the streets demanding their salaries. His comments come at a time when newly trained teachers and nurses in Accra are protesting over 10 months of unpaid salaries.

Bongo Ideas’ statement has sparked heated debate online. Some agree that allowances should be scrapped and funds redirected to vital sectors like health and education, while others believe student support is still necessary.
